Five Self Care Things

Self-care is super important, especially as the world gets back to normal and life becomes hectic again.

It’s also a very personal thing, so here’s my list of things I do, in no particular order.

1 – Music.
At the end of a long day at work, my train journey home will definitely involve headphones and turning up the volume just a tad to help block out the universe for fifty minutes or so.

2 – Making stuff.
I took up making random wooden bead bracelets as a sort of occupational therapy and that progressed to necklaces and charm bracelets. I now sell them on Etsy but the main joy is in sitting there and making something.

3 – Face Mask and Foot Cream.
While I’m not a girlie girl sometimes making my face and feet a bit softer helps me feel better. And it’s a good excuse to stop for half an hour too.

4 – Switching Off.
I’m sure I’ll ramble about the virtues and evils of social media at some point but something as simple as an hour or two without checking your feeds is great. I have made it a more regular thing now by finding other things to do. I may still be on my phone but I’ll be researching ideas for jewellery or blogs, reading articles or books, even just playing games. Anything other than the endless doom scrolling of social media.

5 – Going for a Walk.
Getting out in the fresh air for a bit and getting some exercise really does release a lot of good brain chemicals. I walked daily during the first UK lockdown and found it quite exhilarating. I’d pop my headphones on and just enjoy the peace and quiet at that time. It’s a little more hectic now but getting out for a stroll and taking time to look around and see a bit of nature is really good for the soul.
